I recently stumbled upon a gem of a book, and I just couldn't wait to share it with you all! "Written: how to keep writing and build a habit that lasts" by Bec Evans and Chris Smith (published in 2023). This book is an amazing resource for writers of all levels, full of helpful tips, advice, and the motivation you need to progress with your writing.
"Written: how to keep writing and build a habit that lasts " stands out from other writing books or guides due to its innovative and refreshing perspective. The authors highlight from the outset that there is no universal, fixed approach to writing, acknowledging that each writer may cultivate distinct techniques over time. This point is made explicitly clear in the following extract from the Introduction chapter of the book.
Learning this is both liberating and empowering, particularly for those of us who frequently struggle with strict writing conventions or who have been compelled to use tactics that don't fit us (not all the time!). The authors inspire you to uncover your special writing approach by being more attentive, trial-and-error, and contemplative in your writing routine. This book invites you to experiment and discover what works best for you. It’s important to indicate that Evans and Smith are not just relying on their own experiences. They have done their homework as the book also includes lots of examples from well-known and lesser-known authors who have had to reflect on their own writing processes to handle issues like writer's block or procrastination.
In addition, this book gives a good overview of how ideas like mindfulness, a growth mindset, visualization, and setting goals can help people finish their writing projects. I strongly support the use of these ideas/concepts not just for writing, but for other areas of our lives, including our job prospects. So, I was delighted to find them included in this book. One of the most exciting parts of the book is the section “Writer's Sandbox” at the end of each chapter. These sections offer practical strategies and activities to encourage you and push you to complete your writing. I strongly encourage you to do the exercises included in these sections.
I am still working my way through the book, however I've been so impressed by what I have read so far, I just had to write this post. If you're eager to unlock your writing potential, don't hesitate to pick up a copy of “Written: how to keep writing and build a habit that lasts” today.
